Basic engine disappears and no longer mild hybrid
The Hyundai i20 went through the homologation mill. The compact hatchback meets the most recent emission standard and can therefore stay. Unfortunately, that has consequences for the ability and the price.
Last year Hyundai was forced to reduce the power of the i20 by 1.2 MPI entry engine from 84 to 79 hp. That was the result of optimizing the gasoline engine to meet new emission standards. The entry-level I20 with this gasoline engine had a starting price of around € 24,500. The basic motorization has now been removed from the range. In addition, the only remaining engine version is adjusted and becomes considerably more expensive.
The deletion of the atmospheric 1.2 MPI is the result of a new emission standard in which the Hyundai i20 must pay: Euro-6E-BIS. As a result, Hyundai has now had to reduce the power of the only other engine version. The mild hybrid part of the powertrain also seems to have been deleted. The 1.0 T-GDI had 100 hp and 171 Nm, but from now on brings 90 Nm and the same torque. This has, among other things, consequences for the speed. The acceleration time of 0-100 km/h increases from 10.4 counts to 11.5 seconds. Nobody will be awake about that. Less pleasant is what happens with the price of the Hyundai i20.
The prices of the Hyundai i20 with 1.0 T-GDI go up. The Comfort and Premium versions are becoming € 1,800 more expensive. To alleviate the pain, Hyundai introduces a new entry version for the i20 with 1.0 T-GDI: the e-motion. The arrival of that version yields a new starting price of € 27,995. If Hyundai had not added that variant to the bottom of the range, the least expensive i20 would have cost € 28,895. The Hyundai i20 has survived another round and is still there, to end the story positively.
