Less freight traffic

On three bridges over the Julianakanaal near the Limburg towns of Illikhoven, Roosteren and Echt, restrictions on freight traffic regarding the maximum weight will apply from Wednesday, reports Rijkswaterstaat (RWS).
Research by RWS has shown that there is “fatigue of the steel” of the bridges. “By limiting weight, the bridges can continue to be used safely by other traffic,” said Rijkswaterstaat.
In Echt, no transport above 50 tons is allowed. In Roosteren, no trucks or agricultural vehicles heavier than 3.5 tons are allowed, and in Illikhoven, traffic up to a maximum of 50 tons can drive via the middle of the bridge.
The bridges were built in 1963 and 1965 with an expected lifespan of one hundred years. Because traffic has become more intensive and heavier than it was at the time, the bridges also wear out faster. RWS therefore visually inspects all bridges every year and a comprehensive inspection takes place every six years.
