Kia, Skoda, and Toyota Top Three
The number of new cars sold in the Netherlands increased in May after four months of declining figures. This was reported on Sunday by the automotive industry organizations RAI Vereniging, BOVAG, and RDC. However, Tesla’s sales are still in the doldrums.
In total, 30,188 new passenger cars were registered, more than 7 percent more than in May 2024. Due to the declining sales in previous months, the total number of new cars sold from January to May remained at 148,610. That is 6 percent less than in the same period last year.
Despite more fully electric cars being sold, Tesla’s sales again lagged behind. In May, 1057 of these electric cars were registered, compared to 1660 a year earlier. On a monthly basis, sales did increase: only 382 new Teslas were sold in April.
Tesla is struggling with, among other things, outdated models and increased competition from cheaper Chinese cars. Tesla CEO Elon Musk is also facing criticism for his work for US President Donald Trump. Musk has now given up that work to concentrate on his companies again.
Hybrid cars remain the most popular in the Netherlands, with a market share of over 49 percent in May. This type is followed by fully electric cars with a market share of almost 35 percent. The most registered brand in May was Kia, followed by Skoda and Toyota.
