Omoda 09: Plug-in hybrid with large electric range for 50 mille

Decent Specifications

Omoda 09

Meet the Omoda 09: a substantial plug-in hybrid SUV with a relatively friendly starting price.

Several models from the Chinese Chery are making their way to the Netherlands via sub-brands Omoda and Jaecoo. For our market, the electric Omoda 5 EV and the plug-in hybrid Jaecoo 7 have already been announced, and now Omoda is also getting a plug-in hybrid SUV: the 09.

In its home country, there is no such thing as the brand and model combination Omoda 5. Where in Europe the ‘5’ is the model and ‘Omoda’ is the brand, the car in China goes by the name Chery (brand) Omoda 5 (model). Something similar applies to the Omoda 09 that has now been announced for the Dutch market. However, the Omoda 09 does not exist in China as Chery Omoda 09, but as Yaoguang from another sub-brand of Chery: Exeed. Anyway: the Omoda 09 is coming our way. But what is it then?

Omoda 09

Large and Fast

The Omoda 09 is a 4.77-meter long SUV that will only be available in the Netherlands as a plug-in hybrid. Parent company Chery refers to that plug-in hybrid powertrain as ‘SHS’, which stands for Super Hybrid System. What does it have to offer? Quite a bit! The Super part of the name is apparently not just there. The Omoda 09 has a 143 hp 1.5 four-cylinder gasoline engine with turbo that is supported by two electric motors. One is on the front axle, the other on the rear axle. The system power is no less than 535 hp and 650 Nm. That power is enough to help the SUV, which weighs at least 2,000 kilos, accelerate from a standstill to a speed of 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds.

Omoda 09

135 kilometers range and 50 kW fast charging

More relevant, of course, is what the Omoda 09 has to offer in terms of electric kilometers. That’s not bad either: the Omoda 09 has a 34.46 kWh battery that gives the SUV an electric range of 145 kilometers. Fast charging is even possible with 70 kW. The Omoda 09 is also spacious, because there is 660 liters of stuff in the luggage space. If you fold the rear seat flat, you can even carry 1,783 liters of luggage.

So not crazy on paper, especially if you take into account that the Omoda 09 will soon be available in the Netherlands from around €50,000. We do not yet have an exact price, which will follow in the run-up to the market launch that will take place in September. Omoda also intends to send another plug-in hybrid SUV our way: the C7.
