Rotterdam is once again taking measures against traffic accidents

Hard driving, loud exhausts, loud music

The municipality of Rotterdam is taking new measures against motorists who drive antisocially and violate traffic rules. The so-called Rotterdam Traffic Aso Approach 2.0 has 28 measures.

Rotterdam mentions (much) speeding, unnecessarily hard acceleration and noise from loud exhausts and loud music as examples of antisocial behavior. The municipality is countering this by, among other things, enforcing more and redesigning roads with, for example, speed bumps or road narrowings. Lanes are also temporarily closed on roads where people sometimes drive far too fast at quiet moments. This happens at times when daily traffic is affected as little as possible, according to the municipality.

There will also be a special team of enforcers to go after nuisance offenders. Rotterdam says it will remain in discussion with the Public Prosecution Service about the number of fixed and mobile speed cameras in the city. In addition, measures that already existed, such as mobile checks and a ban on gatherings, will continue to exist.

In recent years, the municipality has taken measures more often against antisocial behavior in traffic, for example by handing out heavier fines. There was also a trial earlier this year on the busy shopping street Meent in the center of the city. The street was temporarily closed to cars. Although the trial was a success, some companies were not easily accessible as a result, according to alderman Pascal Lansink-Bastemeijer (enforcement, public space and mobility). “That is why we need many more measures than simply closing streets or neighborhoods.”
