Kia remains the market leader

Skoda Elroq

The Skoda Elroq is the most popular new car in the Netherlands. Kia is – it is almost boring – again the largest car brand in the Netherlands. That and more is apparent from an analysis of the ‘sales figures’ for the month of May that RAI Association, BOVAG and RDC released.

On Sunday it became clear that more new passenger cars were registered in the Netherlands in May than in the same month last year. 30,188 new passenger cars have been put on license plate, 7.3 percent more than in the same month last year. In the months before, the registration figures regularly dived deep into the red. If we wipe the figures of the first five months of 2025 a lot, then we arrive at 148,610 registered new passenger cars. That is still six percent less than in the same period last year. Time to dive deeper into the numbers.

Of the more than 30,000 new passenger cars that were registered in the Netherlands in May, 10,440 pieces were fully electric. This made EVs good for a market share of almost 35 percent in May. More than one in three of all new passenger cars signed in May had an electric powertrain. Almost half of all new passenger cars had a hybrid powertrain. About one in seven of all new passenger cars registered in May had a gasoline engine that performs its duties without any form of electrical support.

Brands: Kia remains in the lead

Kia knows his dominance. Just like in so far each month of the year, Kia was the largest car brand in the Netherlands in May. In place two we find Skoda, followed by Toyota, Volkswagen and Volvo in places two, three, four and five.

Tesla has to do it again without listing in the top 5. In May 1,057 (-36%) new Tesla’s were placed on license plate. For comparison: in May last year there were 1,660 pieces

Skoda has managed to push the immensely popular EV3 off the throne. The Skoda Elroq – the ‘shortened Enyaq – still had to tolerate the EV3 in April, but can now call itself the most popular new car in the Netherlands. There were 1,093 copies of registered in May. That means that one in ten of all new electric cars that received a license plate in May was an Elroq. With 800 registrations, the Kia Picanto is in two positions, followed by the EV3 in three (751 pieces). The ever to be dragged Tesla Model Y has to do it with 648 registrations with a fourth place, followed by the Toyota Yaris Cross in place five.
