In 2024, the successful first generation of the Skoda Kodiaq gets a successor. The new Kodiaq possesses all the aspects that made its predecessor so popular, keeping it beloved. With its space, comfort, and optional third row of seats, the Kodiaq is an ideal candidate for families and other drivers looking for a practical car.
Is the Skoda Kodiaq a good choice?
Since its introduction, the Skoda Kodiaq has scored many points due to its enormous interior space. The midi-SUV not only offers plenty of space for the people in the front seats, but you also have all the freedom of movement you need in the back seat. If you want to be able to go out with six or seven people? Then there is also an optional third row of seats on the price list, provided you choose the mild hybrid Kodiaq.
The Kodiaq comes with two motorizations, one mild hybrid and one plug-in hybrid. With the mild hybrid, the combustion engine is slightly supported by an electric motor, which results in lower consumption and less emissions.
A plug-in hybrid has the great advantage that it has a battery pack that you can charge with a plug. This allows you to drive this Kodiaq a maximum of 123 kilometers fully electric in theory. The plug-in hybrid Kodiaq also has a larger battery, which means there is no more room for a third row of seats.
This second generation Skoda Kodiaq is sprung tighter than before. Yet it remains a pleasant, comfortable car to drive. It processes bumps in the road surface very neatly and it remains quiet on board even at higher speeds.
You can order a new Skoda Kodiaq in three equipment levels. The basic version bears the name ‘Edition’ and is equipped with, among other things, LED headlights, 17-inch wheels, fabric interior and a 10-inch infotainment screen. If you go for just a little more luxury, then you step into the Business Edition. This gets extras such as 18-inch alloy wheels and a 13-inch touchscreen with navigation.
If you choose the Skoda Kodiaq in Sportline Business version, you can enjoy even more pampering. Think, for example, of full LED matrix headlights, 19-inch wheels, sports seats and black-colored mirror caps, diffuser, wheel arches and grille.
Performances
In the Netherlands, the Skoda Kodiaq is delivered in two flavors: as mild and as plug-in hybrid. The Kodiaq also exists as a diesel, the 2.0 TDI, but it is not intended for the Dutch market.
The first option you come across on the price list is the 150-hp 1.5 TSI mHEV. This is the mild hybrid. According to the manufacturer, this Kodiaq would have an average gasoline consumption of 6 liters per 100 kilometers (1 in 16.7).
In addition, the Kodiaq is supplied as a plug-in hybrid: the 204-hp 1.5 TSI PHEV. This version has a battery pack that you can charge with a plug. According to the manufacturer, the Kodiaq PHEV has a fully electric range of 123 kilometers.
Space and practical usability
Whichever version of the Kodiaq you choose, you always enjoy a spacious interior – both in the back seat and in the trunk. You can take most luggage with you in the mild hybrid, especially if you opt for a five-seater. This variant offers 910 liters of trunk space, which increases to 2,105 liters with a folded down back seat.
If you opt for the optional third row of seats, it will be at the expense of the loading space. But even with this variant you will not be short of space: the seven-seater Kodiaq still has 835 to 2,065 liters left.
Would you rather have a plug-in hybrid Kodiaq? Then you will lose some luggage space due to the large battery pack. But even with the 745 to 1,945 liter trunk of the plug-in hybrid Kodiaq you can get along fine.
Reliability and problems
Although the Skoda Kodiaq is impressive in many areas, there are also some points of attention in the area of reliability. These are mainly software problems – an ailment that is not entirely unknown with new cars.
For example, it sometimes happens with the Skoda Kodiaq that the infotainment system does not want to start up or that the automatic tailgate does not open. Furthermore, there are reports of malfunctions in the driving assistance systems, often caused by poor communication with the front camera.
