Subaru is unveiling an all-new electric crossover in the United States: the Subaru Uncharted. We’ve secretly known it for a while, but with a Toyota badge.
Subaru and Toyota are largely walking the EV path hand in hand, and that is evident again now. This is the Subaru Uncharted, and it may already look familiar to you. That’s correct, because it is essentially Subaru’s version of the Toyota C-HR+ that was unveiled earlier this year. The Uncharted’s relation to it is undeniable. Yet, Subaru has put in quite some work to create a more unique appearance.
For starters, the Subaru Uncharted has a completely different front bumper, different headlights (which admittedly have the same shape on the corners as those of the Toyota), and a completely different ‘grille’ between the headlights. Along the sides, it’s the C-HR+ that dictates, but at the rear, they’ve also worked on a unique face. Here too, we see a different bumper than on the Toyota, and the taillights are two separate units instead of one continuous whole across the entire width. The tailgate comes up a bit between the taillights, where there is one sharp crease across the entire width on the Toyota. Moreover, Subaru has spelled out the brand name, while Toyota has a subtle logo between the taillights.
Rougher Edge, Familiar Technology
Inside the Subaru Uncharted, things have remained a bit more familiar. Of course, you can still see from the steering wheel that you are dealing with a Subaru instead of the Toyota. Not only from the logo on it, but the Subaru Uncharted also has a more angular steering wheel, where the C-HR+ has a traditional round one. All in all, Subaru seems to have succeeded in giving the Uncharted a slightly rougher appearance than its Toyota example.
It will come as no surprise that technically it is a familiar story. The Subaru Uncharted also has a 77 kWh battery (gross), and there is a 224 hp front-wheel-drive version or an AWD with 343 hp. For the FWD, Subaru states the largest driving range, estimated at 483 km. Note that this is not a WLTP value. Toyota states a driving range of about 600 km for the C-HR+. Assume that Subaru’s estimate is closer to reality. The EPA standard in the US is generally a bit sharper. Recharging from 10 to 80 percent takes about 30 minutes with a charging capacity of up to 150 kW.
Possibly for Us Too
The Subaru Uncharted has not yet been presented for the European market, but it could just be that it is coming this way too. Subaru calls the Uncharted a global car, and we are cautiously assuming that it is one of the EVs already announced for us. In the US, they will be up first with the Uncharted at the beginning of next year.
