This Volkswagen Golf has not had pretensions – enthusiasts for 37 years

The Second, As It Was Meant to Be

Volkswagen Golf

The Volkswagen Golf II is certainly an integral part of the Dutch landscape, but nowadays you really have to search a little longer to come across one. Certainly, a neat one like this is not often seen.

Like competitor Opel Kadett, the Volkswagen Golf II was for years a permanent fixture of Dutch street furniture. Not infrequently, such Golfs were bought in later life for next to nothing by young people with a brand-new driver’s license, and that was also the final stop for many Golfs. Sometimes there were a few more years with some exuberant spoiler work on it. Other copies left our country for a new chance in more easterly regions, and of course, many simply ended up in a Dutch junkyard after a long career. However, so many have been sold that there are still quite a few left. Roughly 4,000 with a valid MOT. That’s not bad, is it?

We believe that most of those remaining Golfs are not as tight as this 88. Not only do we dare to say based on the photos that this one has been very well preserved, but it also looks nice and original. Really a Volkswagen Golf II as you could often encounter it back in the day. Extremely unpretentious and modest. The first owner navigated it that way through the first 17 years, then the previous owner also did it for 17 years. Now the car has been with the current provider for 2.5 years. Presumably, it has been showing off in the showroom for a while, although the asking price may also have something to do with such a long time at the same company.

We are not sure if there was ever a higher amount on it, now in any case they are asking six thousand for the Golf 1.3 CL. That is still quite hefty, although we do believe that there is a truly rare, fresh car here. It is of course waiting for someone who is also willing to buy a relatively expensive but otherwise understated Golf II, because that must almost certainly be an enthusiast. Maybe once you have it you can earn some extra money by using the car as an extra for historical films or commercials, because with pre-GAIK plates on it you would think you were back in the 80s, right?
