Renault Clio for second month in a row at the top of European sales

Sandero in second place

Renault Clio

For the second month in a row, the Renault Clio has topped European sales. This is according to new figures from Jato. The Dacia Sandero is once again in second place.

The Dacia Sandero was the most popular new car in Europe for a long time, but it faces competition from its sister brand with whom it shares its base: the Renault Clio. A month ago, it became clear that the Clio, which is in the autumn of its career, took the top position in April, and now it appears that the Renault also finished at the top in May. This is reported by Jato, which analyzed the sales figures of the EU28 countries.

In May, 21,163 new Renault Clios were sold. A growth of 12 percent compared to the same month last year and also clearly more than the 19,948 Dacia Sanderos sold. The Dacia still managed to secure the second spot and recorded a 3 percent sales growth. In third place was the Volkswagen T-Roc, with 18,420 units and a decrease of 10 percent compared to 2024. The Peugeot 208 improved by 6 percent and came in fourth place with 16,485 units. The top five is completed by the Volkswagen Golf. Of these, 15,987 units were sold, 18 percent less than last year.

Sales May 2025

Jato also directly reports the fuel mix of the most popular models. It is striking that no less than three-quarters of the Clio had only a combustion engine, while a quarter had a hybrid powertrain. For the Peugeot 208, the e-208 accounted for only 8 percent of all sales. Furthermore, it is noticeable that Dacia is successful with the hybrid powertrain that is now available in the Duster. 28 percent of the Dusters sold were hybrids. Finally, with the Citroën ë-C3, the electric version is significantly more popular than with its stablemate Peugeot 208, because 26 percent of the C3s were fully electric.
