Volkswagen leaves the segment of the Midi-SUV segment to others for the time being. The brand has no ambition to get an electric SUV between the ID4 and the future ID-Cross, Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schäfer explains in conversation with Autoweek during the IAA.
Volkswagen’s electrification plans in the compact class dominate the news from the brand. It presented the ID Cross Concept and announced that the compact hatchback under the ID3 will not be called ‘ID2’ but ID Polo. The new Volkswagen T-Roc is just as important, but gets a little less attention. What is striking: a striking gap remains in the Volkswagen range. With the enormous popularity of cross-overs and SUVs, it is remarkable that there is no electric counterpart to the T-Roc. Models such as the Kia EV3 and Volvo EX30 show with their sales figures how enormously important this segment is, but Volkswagen has nothing here. And that is not accidental, we hear from CEO Thomas Schäfer if we present this question to the IAA.
“We have several brands in our group and we want to prevent us from making the same cars. We have Skoda with the Elroq that is exactly there, Cupra has the Tavascan who also plays a different role than our cars. So we have decided that we are not going to operate in that segment with Volkswagen for the time being. We also have trust that the ID Cross is in that room.”
