With Blown 1.5
A brand new Volvo XC70 is ready to please at least the Chinese market with its presence. AutoWeek can now tell you more about the new SUV, which has been shrouded in mystery until now.
Earlier this month, Volvo unexpectedly showed a first set of photos of a completely new XC70. The new Volvo XC70 is no longer an adventurous station wagon, but in its latest form is an SUV-like vehicle that you should see as a more spacious alternative to the XC60. We already knew that the new Volvo XC70 is based on Volvo’s also new Scalable Modular Architecture platform (SMA) and that it will be a plug-in hybrid. After some research in the database of the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, we can tell you more about the new XC70.
We now know exactly how big the Volvo XC70 is. The new XC70 is 4.82 meters long, 1.89 meters wide and 1.65 meters high. That makes it 12 centimeters longer than the current XC60, but also 13 centimeters shorter than the XC90. The electric EX90 is of course even longer with its vehicle length of 5.04. Striking: the XC70 is a small centimeter lower than the XC60. The wheelbase of the new Volvo XC70 is 2.9 meters. This gives the newcomer 4 centimeters more between the front and rear axles than the XC60. The XC90 in turn has an 8 centimeter larger wheelbase. The new XC70 is therefore also between the XC60 and XC90 in terms of size.
Volvo already indicated that the new XC70 is a plug-in hybrid. We now know that the combustion engine – not exactly surprising – is a 1.5 four-cylinder petrol engine. In the XC70, this produces at least 163 hp. We cannot yet tell you how powerful the electric motor is. However, the XC70 should be able to cover around 200 kilometers on electric power alone. For now, the XC70 has only been announced for the Chinese market, although Volvo has indicated that it is investigating whether the car can also be shipped to other markets.
