Recently I was on vacation in the United States for a few weeks and I was more surprised there than the beautiful nature. After 4,500 km through four different states I knew for sure: courtesy in traffic still exists.
If you like driving, you will ever have to go to the United States. Although the roads are sometimes quite asphalted and it is sometimes a bit confusing that people choose a lane with apparent randomness, but you can eat so beautifully miles. You have from those roads that go to the horizon through the sizzling heat in a straight line, but also beautiful winding mountain roads that are wide enough to not get half a heart subsidence of an oncoming car every turn. If you really want to send a nice fun, then I have the ‘Sidewinder’ in Arizona. That is a piece of historic route 66 with no fewer than 191 bends. Do you immediately have a nice visit to the Wild Western village of Oatman.
Not only the roads through the beautiful and especially vast nature are to lick your fingers. I also noticed driving in San Francisco in a very positive way. There are almost no traffic lights, because Blok After Block you will come to a neat square intersection with only stopboards. If that goes well … Well, that’s just fine. Even if it is busy. Everyone waits nicely until it is his turn to cross. Whoever arrived first may be the first to drive again. It is that simple and it also works. I experienced two times in those three weeks when there was some doubt who was allowed to ride first, but in both cases there was patient non-verbal communication, to come to a choice. Courteous handling, it still exists in a large city in the US.
In Los Angeles, the experience was something else, but it was also striking how defensive is generally driven. No wasp’s nest like here, in which everyone seems to want to fight the last centimeter. There is of course a lot more space there, but still. It was a relief. Oh and then you still have parking. That is possible almost everywhere. Even around the corner at the Hollywood Walk of Fame, or right next to the Santa Monica Pier, for rates that brings many Dutch city to the jaws. Perfect. After numerous car holidays, the US is now at number 1 for me. A bit apart from all the beautiful that can be seen.
