Zeeotter: BYD’s electric city car has a striking billet

Narrow, tall and electric

BYD Racco

The BYD Dolphin Surf gets a smaller cousin. That’s not a surfing dolphin, but a real sea otter. BYD is picking from the barrel of animal names and pulled out Racco. We can now show you the interior of that BYD Racco.

The Chinese BYD has a preference for animal names. We know several variations on the Seal theme, but BYD also sells cars with names like Dolphin, Dolphin Surf (elsewhere: Seagull), Sealion, and Shark. To that list of animal species that love to be in a soaking wet environment, it adds another: Racco. Racco is Japanese for ‘sea otter’. The BYD Racco has a Japanese name for a reason. With the Racco, BYD wants to attract Japanese kei-car buyers. We can now show you more of that BYD Racco.

Already in October last year, BYD unveiled the appearance of the Racco during the Japan Mobility Show in Tokyo. It is an electric city car with dimensions that place it in the kei-car category, making it eligible for tax benefits. It is 3.4 meters short, just under 1.48 meters wide, and a remarkable 1.80 meters high. After the exterior, we can now also show you the interior of the Racco. The city EV has a relatively simple dashboard with a digital instrument cluster and vertical air vents on either side. A central infotainment screen is located in the dashboard, with a small, clear button island below it. Noteworthy is the stubby lever that protrudes from there, with which you select the driving direction.

Official specifications are not yet available, although rumors speak of a 20 kWh battery. The electric motor will have a maximum of 64 hp. With more power, the Racco would no longer be a kei-car. As far as is known, the Racco will only be launched in Japan. There, the electric city car will set its sights on cars like this Nissan Sakura EV.
