Just kidding, it’s not happening after all

Do you know that joke about the EV tax addition that would go to 22 percent in 2026? That didn’t happen after all, but the EVs that still had to be delivered in 2025 have already been ordered. This can be seen in the sales figures, which also show a healthy increase across the board.
In November 2025, 35,601 new passenger cars were registered in the Netherlands, according to Bovag and RAI. That is 3.3 percent more than last year, but the increase in sales in the field of fully electric cars is particularly impressive. A total of 17,192 EVs were sold, good for a market share of no less than 48.3 percent for this form of propulsion. This number also means that 26.5 percent more EVs were sold in November 2025 than in the same month last year. Surprising? Certainly not, because the tax addition for fully electric cars would be equalized with that of fuel cars per 2026. From next year, business drivers for a newly registered EV would have to add 22 percent of the new value to their income, while in 2025 that is still 17 percent up to an amount of 30,000 euros. More than enough reason to order such an EV in 2025 if the current car had to be replaced anyway, and that is exactly what many business drivers understandably did.
Since last week we know that that rush was not so necessary after all, because the tax addition for electric cars in 2026 will be reduced to 18 percent over the first 30,000 euros at the very last moment. The phasing out is therefore gradual and if we had known that earlier, the sales figures would undoubtedly have looked very different this month. But that was not the case, and so many more EVs have been registered.
Over the whole of 2025 so far, 8.8 percent more EVs have been sold than last year, although the total number of passenger cars sold so far is still 1.4 percent behind 2024.

At brand level, it is striking that Kia, last year’s number 1, is again losing ground. Last month, the Korean brand was still in 3rd place, now it just misses the podium with a fourth place. Skoda is now in 3rd place, Renault in 2nd and Volkswagen can again call itself number 1. Also striking is the number 5 of the top 5 brands: Audi. The brand scored well with the A6 E-Tron (photo above), which was registered 409 times in November and already scored 1,920 customers in 2025. The older, but cheaper Q4 also continues to score with 474 units in November. In total, Audi managed to sell 2,009 cars in November.
At model level, we see all familiar names, although the fifth place for the outgoing Renault Clio is without a doubt impressive. The Skoda Elroq takes the number 1 position, just ahead of its big rival Kia EV3. The Tesla Model 3 is also doing very well and undoubtedly benefited from 0 percent interest on business financing. And then the cheaper Standard still has to come. Place four is for the small and also electric Volvo EX30, which means that the entire top four consists of purely electric models.
The top 5 most popular models largely corresponds to the top five most popular EVs. Only the number 5 is different: not the Clio, but the Volkswagen ID7 is in the electric list in that place.
