The number of electric cars in the Netherlands is increasing. In which municipalities is the proportion of electric cars in the local car fleet actually the largest and the smallest?
In absolute terms, the number of electric cars in the Netherlands is steadily increasing. In 2019, there were 45,000 electric cars in the Netherlands, at the beginning of 2023 330,000, and on April 1 of this year, there were already 594,000 electric cars registered in the Netherlands. Because the total car fleet is also growing, the proportion of EVs in the total Dutch car fleet is not increasing very rapidly. Of all 9.3 million cars registered in the Netherlands at the beginning of April, 595,000 were electric. That’s 6.4 percent. Curious to know in which municipalities the proportion of EVs in the local car fleet is the largest or the smallest? We are too, and fortunately we can tell you that now. Please note: the figures are for 2024.
Most Cars Electric
Energy comparison site Energievergelijk.nl has neatly listed this. What turns out? In the municipality of Houten, almost 3 in 10 of all cars are electric. The EV share there is 27.1 percent. In second place we find the municipality of Haarlemmermeer (25.1 percent), followed by Breda (22.7 percent), Almere (20.9 percent), and Amersfoort (19 percent). According to Energievergelijk.nl, the top rankings of the municipalities of Houten, Haarlemmermeer, and Almere are relatively easy to explain. Here there are many single-family homes with parking on private property. That would make it easier to install a charging station. Also, incomes here would be relatively high. In Breda and Amersfoort, the municipal policy regarding EVs would be attractive.
Fewest Electric Cars
In the municipality of Vlieland, not even 1 in 100 cars is an EV. This makes it the municipality where the smallest part of the car fleet is electric. In second place we find Pekela (1.6 percent), followed by Staphorst, Westerwolde, and Schiermonnikoog. According to Energievergelijk.nl, there are relatively many low incomes in Pekela, Staphorst, and Westerwolde, and therefore also older car fleets and less charging infrastructure. The Wadden Islands in the Top 5 have a car-free policy.
Most and Fewest Charging Points
In Amsterdam, with 36,645 charging points, there are the most charging points in absolute terms. In second place we find Rotterdam (29,764 units) and in third place The Hague (23,328). The fewest charging points are in the municipality of Vlieland (53 units), followed by Schiermonnikoog (54 units) and Rozendaal (222 units). On Ameland and Terschelling there are 286 and 318 charging points respectively. Please note: this concerns both public charging points and home charging points.
