With thanks to the micro-EVs

The number of mopeds in the Netherlands has grown by almost 40 percent in five years. This is logically mainly due to mopeds that don’t actually make any noise.

There are now 23,666 mopeds in the Netherlands, also known as 45 km/h cars. That is more than 38 percent more than five years ago, according to MicroMobiel.nl based on CBS data. Traditionally, we are talking about micro-cars such as those from Canta, Aixam and Ligier, but nowadays electric small cars in particular are in the spotlight in this category. They have played a key role in the enormous growth.

Small EVs such as the Opel Rocks Electric and the Citroën Ami, but also the even simpler Birò, have been marketed well in recent years. Or to the Gooische teenager, depending on how you look at it. According to MicroMobiel.nl, the latter is not a prejudice: the moped is particularly popular in the municipalities of Laren and Blaricum.

Laren takes the crown, with 5.1 mopeds per 1,000 inhabitants, followed by Blaricum (4.4 per 1,000). There are also relatively many in Amsterdam (3.4 per 1,000), although Texel (3.8), Schiermonnikoog (4) and Terschelling (4.3) stand out even more. Mopeds are therefore also clearly very popular on the Wadden Islands and you can imagine why. The distances are relatively short and it never really has to be fast.
