The Smart #5 is an electric SUV that, depending on the chosen version, can travel up to 590 kilometers on a single charge. Now there is a Smart #5 that can travel more than 1,600 without recharging. This is the Smart #5 EHD. And it’s not an EV at all!
The Smart #5 is the largest and most expensive Smart ever. It is, like the #1 and #3, always a fully electric car. At least, that was the case. Earlier this year, based on reports from the English Autocar, we wrote that the Smart #5 would eventually also get a plug-in hybrid powertrain. AutoWeek can now give you the first photos and the first information about this.
The plug-in hybrid version of the Smart #5 is called the Smart #5 EHD in full. It has a 163 hp 1.5 gasoline engine with turbo, according to information that AutoWeek has unearthed from the database of the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. We do not yet know how powerful the electric motor is. However, we can report that the SUV has a battery of ‘more than 40 kWh’. The Smart #5 EHD should be able to travel more than 250 kilometers on electric power alone. The total range should be more than 1,600 kilometers.
Whether and when the Smart #5 EHD will also come to the Netherlands is not known at this time.
