The set complete: facelifted Mercedes-Benz S-Class as AMG

Mercedes-AMG S 63 Spyshots

The facelifted Mercedes-Benz S-Class has already appeared on this site three times. Twice it was the regular variant, once the extra-long Maybach. Now it’s the turn of the last branch on the tree of the new S: the Mercedes-AMG S 63.

Top limousine or not, the Mercedes S-Class also has to keep up with the times. Don’t expect it to suddenly get a coarse, multi-layered facade, because it’s not a BMW. Mercedes subtly addresses the S-Class, although you could certainly experience the rear light elements pressed in the shape of the Mercedes star as kitschy. We have known those taillights since the E-Class, although it seems that the S-Class gets three instead of two ‘stars’ per side. There must be a difference.

The Mercedes-AMG S 63 E-Performance Lang, as this monster is officially called, has a state-of-the-art plug-in hybrid powertrain. It combines a V8, electric motors and a battery pack into a beastly package with 802 hp, 1,430 Nm, a 0-100 time of 3.3 seconds and the possibility to drive electrically for a while. If something doesn’t work with this car, it never will, so there is little reason to assume that much will change technically about the supreme S. So we’ll stick with a new interior with larger screens, the subtly adjusted light units all around and undoubtedly a range of new colors, wheels and materials. The S63 is currently the only S-Class with a Mercedes star in instead of on the grille, we are curious whether this will remain the case or whether more variants will follow this example.
