This is the electric Volkswagen ID2 – or is it the ID Polo?

Sooner or later

Spyshots Volkswagen ID2 ID Polo

The Volkswagen ID3 is currently the smallest electric Volkswagen, but not for long. In 2026, there will be a fully electric alternative to the Polo. It is that Volkswagen ID2 – or ID Polo after all? – that we are seeing in production form outdoors for the first time now.

Is the Volkswagen Golf as a plug-in hybrid e-Hybrid not electric enough for you? Then you now have to switch to another model. Where ‘in the past’ you could still step into an electric e-Golf, for an electric Volkswagen in the Golf segment you have to go to the ID3. Volkswagen does not yet have smaller EVs, but they are coming. For example, in 2027 there will be a real electric hatchback that you can see as a successor to the (e-)Up. A year earlier – in 2026 – the Volkswagen Polo will get a fully electric alternative. We can see this electric hatchback, which should have a starting price of less than €25,000, very well in these photos for the first time.

The fact that there will be an electric equivalent of the Polo has been known for years. At the beginning of 2023, Volkswagen already showed the ID2all Concept, a study model that looked ahead to a smaller ID model. At the time, Volkswagen indicated that the production model derived from that show car would go into production in 2025 and should cost less than €25,000. The arrival of the model has been postponed to 2026, but Volkswagen does not seem to be changing the appearance of the car.

Volkswagen Id2all

The production version is very similar to this ID2all Concept.

Volkswagen has done its best to disguise the white prototype of the ‘Volkswagen ID2’ that you see in this new set of photos as a Polo. However, the rear lights are just stickers, as are the headlights. The white sticker sheet is so tight that the contours of what is hidden underneath are clearly visible. For example, the strip that connects the actual rear lights of the electric hatchback is already clearly visible and even the ‘recesses’ on either side of the rear bumper can be found on the car. The ID2all Concept also had these. Nice detail: even the handles that you seem to see on the rear doors are stickers. The actual handles are hidden in the window frame.

Technique

If the technology of the ID2all Concept is translated as accurately to the production model as the design, then we already know a lot about the newcomer. The ID2all Concept was based on a modified, simpler version of the MEB platform that you know from the ID3. It is called MEB Entry and is basically not rear-wheel drive, but front-wheel drive. At 4.05 meters, the ID2all was almost as large as the Polo, but it is wider, higher and has a longer wheelbase than the car it will be next to. Volkswagen promises that the ID2 offers ‘Golf space’ in a Polo-sized car. Interesting. Also interesting: the luggage space of 440 liters.

The aforementioned study model had a 226 hp electric motor. That made that concept car even stronger than the current Polo GTI. Speaking of GTIs: the ID2 will also get one.

ID2 or ID Polo?

The question remains what the electric Polo-like will be called. Model name ID2 is obvious, but Volkswagen once mentioned that the successor to the current generation Golf merges with the ID3 and will then go through life as ID Golf. It is therefore conceivable that the electric little brother of that ID Golf will not be called ID2, but ID Polo.
